What is a laiki agora?

A laiki agora (λαϊκή αγορά, “people's market”) is the weekly open-air market of a Greek neighbourhood. On one fixed day each week a street closes to traffic and fills with stalls of fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs, olives, cheese, honey, flowers and household goods. Sellers are either producers, selling what they grow themselves, or professional traders. The first laiki opened in Athens in 1929; today Attica has more than 250 conventional markets in 60 municipalities, run by the Attica Region's Farmers' Markets Authority. They operate Monday to Saturday, typically from 7–7:30 am until about 2:30–3:30 pm, except on public holidays. Many alternate between two streets each half-year (winter and summer period), which is why Laikimap always shows the current location.
